That approach increases the risk of cultural assumptions contaminating the analysis early. Instead, coding should stay descriptive—short summaries of what participants actually say. For example, if a participant talks about walking in a forest, the code should reflect “walking in the forest,” not inferred meanings like spirituality or economic value unless those meanings are explicitly stated.
Interpretation becomes more appropriate only after coding, when themes are developed and the dataset is reduced into patterns. Even then, the transcript emphasizes that theme development should still aim to show what the data indicates rather than what the researcher thinks. The strongest point for reflection and interpretation is the discussion section, where findings are contextualized and explained. At that stage, cultural and personal perspectives are unavoidable—so the best response is deliberate reflexivity, especially for context-specific topics.
In short, cultural influence can’t be eliminated, but it can be managed. Rigorous, descriptive coding reduces the impact of cultural expectations early on, while transparency, reflexivity, and participant-informed checks help keep later interpretation grounded.
