Qualitative validity focuses on credibility and trustworthiness because replicability is unrealistic when different researchers interpret the same dataset.

Qualitative research can’t be “replicated” in the same way as experiments, so credibility—not repeatability—becomes the central yardstick. Reliability in qualitative work is often less useful because giving the same dataset to three researchers typically produces at least some differences in interpretation. Instead, validity is framed as trustworthiness: whether the findings genuinely reflect participants’ meanings and whether researchers avoid letting personal expectations shape interview questions, fieldwork, or analysis.
Validity in this sense is about reducing bias in multiple forms. That includes bias from how interview questions are developed, bias introduced during the interview process, and bias that creeps in during coding and interpretation—when what emerges starts to reflect what the researcher hoped to find rather than what participants actually meant. To manage those risks, the transcript points to Robson’s six strategies for reducing bias and strengthening validity, with an additional strategy added by the researcher.
The first strategy is prolonged involvement, which increases trust through time—whether through the length of the study, membership in the community being studied, or even being a friend of participants. More trust tends to produce more honest, straightforward accounts, which in turn improves the likelihood that findings are credible.
Second is triangulation, used to cross-check interpretations. Data triangulation draws on multiple sources such as interviews, focus groups, diaries, and observations. Methodological triangulation combines approaches, including mixing quantitative and qualitative methods in mixed-methods designs. Theory triangulation brings multiple theories into the analysis stage to test whether findings hold up under different interpretive lenses. Across these forms, triangulation is presented as a practical way to reduce bias.
Third is peer debriefing (pure debriefing in the transcript), where experienced qualitative researchers review the study at different stages. The goal is not just feedback but a more objective, critical assessment that helps identify limitations and counter researcher blind spots.
Fourth is member checking, which tests emerging interpretations with participants. The transcript highlights a common and powerful approach: reaching out after analysis—by text, email, or messenger—to ask participants to clarify what they meant before conclusions are finalized. This directly reduces bias from researchers’ assumptions.
Fifth is negative case analysis, which treats mismatching cases not as threats but as information. When a participant or case doesn’t fit the emerging pattern, exploring that divergence can clarify why most other cases align and can strengthen the overall explanation.
Sixth is an audit trail: keeping systematic records of research activities, including transcripts, coding decisions, codebooks, and researcher journals. If someone challenges the findings, the documentation provides evidence of how interpretations were built.
The transcript closes by adding a personal strategy: be extremely detailed in analysis and coding. Detailed, descriptive codes—line by line, paragraph by paragraph, or sentence by sentence—are presented as a key mechanism for improving validity by making interpretations more transparent and grounded in the data.
